It can therefore certainly be described as an “Old Town island.” Regular events, such as the Wallenstein Days folk festival or the Rügen Bridge Run, a diverse cultural program, and a thriving economy—shaped by shipbuilding, metal fabrication, and IT companies—contribute to a vibrant city atmosphere.Where’s the trip headed? The Hanseatic city of Stralsund is the tourist hub on the Baltic Sea. The city is affectionately known as the “Gateway to the Island of Rügen”—though the city itself has plenty to offer. Beautifully renovated townhouses spanning seven centuries of the Hanseatic era define the historic cityscape. Together with the Old Town of Wismar, Stralsund is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Old Town Highlights The UNESCO World Heritage Site captivates visitors with its picturesque downtown. The ornate façade of the old town hall is the most significant secular building on the German Baltic coast and illustrates the city’s wealth and power during the Hanseatic era. The historic buildings and monuments in the Brick Gothic style preserve the medieval layout almost perfectly. Everywhere within the city walls, you’ll find examples of Brick Gothic architecture. Visit, for example, St. Nicholas Church or the Museum House on Mönchstraße. As you wander through the city, you’ll discover many more magnificent buildings. See More of the Sea—Whether the world’s oceans, the Baltic Sea, or the North Sea—experience the beauty of the underwater world at the spectacular OZEANEUM. Watch schools of mackerel, turtles, rays, and sharks in the 21 aquariums. The “1:1 Giants of the Seas” exhibition is also particularly impressive. The penguins on the rooftop terrace delight every visitor.Love for the HarborStroll along the city harbor with a view of the Rügen Bridge, the Strelasund, and the island of Rügen, a fish sandwich in hand. Just keep an eye out for the hungry seagulls. This is also where the famous Gorch Fock I is moored—now a museum ship. You can learn how to tie the perfect bowline knot at the knot-tying school there. Feel like hoisting the sails sometime? A sunset sailing trip or a moonlight sail is especially romantic. Salty, sour, sweet, and delicious—a day like this in the fresh air will make you hungry. You should definitely try the original Stralsund Bismarck herring. You can even take a small barrel home with you. Or if you can’t resist a sweet treat, treat yourself to a marzipan tasting at the Stralsund Marzipan Manufactory or enjoy high tea in the Old Town. The local Störtebeker Brewery brews internationally acclaimed beer. Ready for the Island? The Baltic Sea islands of Rügen and Hiddensee, as well as the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula, are great destinations year-round. GETTING THEREBy PlaneThe nearest airport is Rostock-Laage Airport, though domestic flights within Germany are limited to just a few connections. It’s recommended to fly to Hamburg-Fuhlsbüttel or Berlin-Tegel and continue your journey from there by rental car or train. By Train: The Stralsund train station is connected to Deutsche Bahn’s long-distance and regional networks. From the station, you can easily take a taxi to the hotel. Or you can walk the 1.7 kilometers to the hotel. By Car: Coming from the A 20 (either direction)—take Exit 24 “Stralsund” onto the B96 toward Stralsund/Fähre/Sassnitz. Drive along the federal highway for 28 kilometers. Then take the right exit toward Stralsund/Altstadt/Stralsund-Franken. After 350 meters, turn left onto Greifswalder Chaussee (follow signs for Altstadt/Frankenvorstadt). Follow the road for 350 meters. At the roundabout, go straight onto Frankendamm. The destination is located one kilometer ahead on the right.
