Right Next to the Train Station and Downtown The new Hyperion Hotel Leipzig is located right next to the city center—known for its cultural and music scene—directly on the east side of Leipzig’s main train station. The train station—a sight in its own right—offers excellent access to the trade fair grounds and the Red Bull Arena Leipzig, the city’s stadium. The completely redesigned area between the train station and Brandenburger Straße includes not only the elegant hotel complex but also the new long-distance bus terminal, a pedestrian passageway, and the “Flanier Plaza.” Its close proximity to the main station is also ideal for all city travelers who would like to reach the sights, restaurants, and theaters in the city center on foot. It takes just five minutes to walk from the Hyperion Hotel Leipzig to Augustusplatz. With an area of approximately 40,000 square meters, it is one of the largest squares in Germany. Surrounded by the opera house, which opened in 1960; the Gewandhaus, inaugurated in 1981 under the direction of Kurt Masur; and the impressive university buildings—the nearly 100-meter-tall “Wisdom Tooth” and the modern glass structure that commemorates the Gothic Paulinerkirche, demolished in 1968—the square captivates visitors with its cultural flair. Take a seat on a bench by the historic Mende Fountain or go in search of the “golden egg,” the Democracy Bell, which commemorates the Monday demonstrations of 1989.Afterward, stroll from Augustusplatz along Grimmaische Straße to the Mädler Passage. Flanked by bronze statues of Mephisto, Faust, and students, this Art Nouveau passageway leads to the restaurant Auerbachs Keller. The Leipzig student Johann Wolfgang von Goethe himself enjoyed sitting here and immortalized the wine cellar in his “Faust.” The restaurant is divided into four historic wine taverns and the Großer Keller, built in 1912. If you’re coming here directly from the Hyperion Hotel Leipzig, it’s a good ten-minute walk. Just a few more minutes’ walk away, St. Thomas Church awaits you. It is the former workplace of Johann Sebastian Bach and home to the internationally renowned St. Thomas Choir. The church building, which has been renovated several times throughout its history, was consecrated in 1496 and is characterized from the outside by its Renaissance tower. In front of the entrance stands a Bach monument, which is a popular photo spot. You can regularly listen to the St. Thomas Choir—founded as early as 1212—during their weekly motets on Fridays and Saturdays. It takes about 15 minutes to walk here from the Hyperion Hotel Leipzig.Also just under a quarter of an hour’s walk from the Hyperion Hotel Leipzig is the Grassi Museum. In 1880, the merchant Franz Dominic Grassi bequeathed his fortune to the city of Leipzig, which had the museum built between 1925 and 1929 in the New Objectivity and Art Deco styles. Today, it houses the Museum of Applied Arts, the Museum of Ethnology, and the Museum of Musical Instruments. For a break between exhibitions, visit the museum café or take a stroll through the Old St. John’s Cemetery, located behind the museum.If you’re staying in Leipzig for more than one night, a visit to the Monument to the Battle of the Nations is also well worth it. The monumental structure was dedicated on October 18, 1913, to mark the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Nations near Leipzig. At 91 meters tall, it is one of the largest monuments in Europe. There are 500 steps leading up to the observation deck, some of which wind around the dome as a narrow staircase. You can also take the elevator to the middle platform. Also worth seeing are the Hall of Fame and the museum. From the Hyperion Hotel Leipzig in the city center, it takes about 15 minutes to get here by car. The S-Bahn ride from the train station takes ten minutes.
