Travel guides describe Gengenbach as “one of Germany’s most beautiful ‘little towns.’” Half-timbered houses as far as the eye can see, alongside historic towers, gates, hidden corners, and narrow alleys. The heart of the historic old town is the market square and the town hall, which transforms into the world’s largest Advent calendar house in winter and attracts tens of thousands of visitors each year. Historic Gengenbach is a great starting point for hikes of varying difficulty levels. The side valleys, where you can enjoy and experience the “real” Black Forest, are right on your doorstep. For example, the Kinzig Valley St. James’ Way passes through Gengenbach’s market square.
